Abstract: This dissertation is a history of the changing definitions of intimacy, gender and family relationships, and home among the Minangkabau, the world's largest matrilineal Muslim society. In it I analyze local interpretations and negotiations of identity and Islam in a setting that is often seen as the periphery of the Ummat Islam (Islamic World), making use of sources overlooked by Dutch colonizers and other scholars.
