Qi Wang

Peking University ·Professor Qi Wang’s research interests are at the intersection of cognitive and social development, focusing on the development of autobiographical memory. She is particularly interested in the relationship between autobiographical memory and the self as they develop across the lifecourse and in the context of culture. Together with her collaborators, she has conducted studies to examine how cultural self-constructs sustain autobiographical remembering by affecting information processing at the level of the individual and by shaping social practices of remembering between individuals. These studies illustrate that constructs of the self differ across cultures as a function of the social orientations, cultural values, and narrative environments in which children are raised. In turn, such differences in self-construct have powerful effects on the structure, content, and long-term accessibility of autobiographical memories. She has recently completed a 4-year longitudinal study funded by NIH that tested her new theory of autobiographical memory development. She proposes that children's emotional understanding comprises an important mechanism for the development of autobiographical memory, both of which are shaped by early family socialization practices. One hundred and eighty-nine European American, Chinese immigrant, and native Chinese children and their mothers participated in this study. Current research examines cultural effects on the perceptual, retention, and retrieval processes of remembering; and social-cognitive factors in the development of autobiographical memory in middle childhood funded by NSF.

Susan Xue

Haiping Yan
Photo of Haiping YanProfessor of Theatre and Cultural Theory at Cornell University ·Ph.D. & M.A., Cornell University; B.A., Fudan University ·Before she joined Cornell faculty, Yan had taught at the University of Colorado, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and as Professor of Critical Studies and Director of the US-China Arts and Media Programs at The School of Theatre, Film and Television at UCLA ·Yan’s specialties include twentieth century East Asian (primarily Chinese), European, and sub-Saharan African dramas, critical theory, and transnational performance studies·Her book publications include Chinese Women Writers and the Feminist Imagination, 1905-1948 (Routledge Publishers 2006, paperback edition 2008), The Journey of Homecoming: A Collection of Essays on Gender, Culture, and Global Politics (All China Writers Association Press, 1996 & 1998), Theatre and Society: An Anthology of Contemporary Chinese Drama (ed. & intro., M.E. Sharpe Publishers 1998 & 2000), Other Transnationals: Asian Diaspora in Performance (a special issue of Modern Drama,  guest editor and contributor, Summer 2005), and Globalization and the Development of Humanistic Studies(an anthology of critical essays co-authored by US and Chinese leading scholars, co-editor and contributor, Shanghai Classics, 2006). Recently completed her new book titled Presence of the Spectator: Multilingual Performance and the Problem of Historical Intelligibility, she is now working on two new books on transnational imagination and theatrical agency, both will be published by the University of Michigan Press. ·Her accolades include China’s 1980-1981 First Prize for Excellence in Drama (the equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize in the U.S.) for her ten-act historical play titled Li Shimin, Prince of Qin, and CNN’s 1999 selection as one of “six most influential Chinese cultural figures” for her scholarly and creative works both in English and Chinese ·Haiping Yan served on the Executive Committee of the American Society for Theatre Research and worked as the President Elect of Women and Theatre Association. She has been serving as a judge on the Best Book Annual Award Committee for the American Association for Theatre in Higher Education since 2006. ·Yan is an invited mini-seminar leader of 2006 Cornell School of Criticism and Theory, and the 2007-2008 Norman Freehling Professor at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Yan holds a Zijiang Chair Professorship in the Arts and Humanistic Studies at East China Normal University in Shanghai, conducting advanced summer seminars and international scholarly forums.

Honggang Yang
Photo of Honggang YangHonggang joined NSU in 1998. He has been serving as Dean since 1999 · He earned his Ph.D. in applied anthropology from the University of South Florida. His Master of Jurisprudence was in sociology and social psychology from Nankai University in China. He also received the Leadership & Management Institute Certificate from Harvard. ·In the early 1990s Honggang worked for the Carter Presidential Center of Emory University, as research associate and internship coordinator. He taught and chaired the Antioch program in conflict resolution in Ohio. He had served on several councils and boards in the fields of conflict resolution, anthropology, peace research, and community development, currently serving as Editor-in-Chief for the semiannual peer-reviewed journal of "Peace and Conflict Studies"--a multidisciplinary publication. He is also on the editorial boards for "Conflict Resolution Quarterly" and "American Review of China Studies." ·Honggang was honored as the NSU Academic Dean of the Year in Student Life Achievement at NSU and the SOCHE Faculty Awardee for Teaching Excellence from the Southwestern Ohio Council for Higher Education ·As a professor of interdisciplinary studies, his specialties include reflective practice, peacemaking among helping professionals, and experiential learning for mid-career students · Honggang's wife, Jie, works at the Florida Atlantic University, while his daughter, Lingda, is an alum of the College of William & Mary and Emory's Rollins School of Public Health. He enjoys playing soccer and tennis whenever he has an opportunity.

Tao Yang
Photo of Tao YangTao Yang is East Asian Librarian (Assistant Professor rank) at Rutgers University in New Jersey ·His major research project is a multi-disciplinary study of Chinese-language newspapers published in North America ·He graduated from Beijing University with B.A. and M.A. in archaeology; received his Master of Library Science degree from the University of Arizona, where he is presently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in anthropology He has published an article (in Chinese) on the Western-language doctoral dissertations on China. Another paper on the Chinese-language newspapers in North America is forthcoming.

Ginny Qin Zhan 
Photo of Ginny Qin ZhanDr. Ginny Qin Zhan, associate professor of psychology, received her Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Developmental Psychology from Cornell University. Her research interests are: effects of culture on human development; psychological development of Chinese only children; cultural identity of Chinese Americans, parenting styles; and cross-cultural gender role issues. She has published in a number of academic journals and books published both in the United States and China. Dr. Zhan spent a semester as an exchange faculty at Dalian Maritime University in northeast China in the spring of 2008, conducting research and teaching a graduate social psychology course.

Jie Zhang
Photo of Jie ZhangDr. Zhang is a full professor of sociology at State University of New York College at Buffalo. He was educated at Shandong University in China with a BA degree in 1982 and at Brigham Young University in the United States of America with a Ph.D. degree in 1992. Dr. Zhang teaches social psychology, classical theories, social medicine, and research methods. He received the Buffalo State President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2002, SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service in 2005, and President’s Award for Excellence in Research in 2007. Dr. Zhang’s research interests are in the mental health and suicidal behaviors. He is a specialist in cultural studies of suicide and an American Chinese scholar in the area of mental health and suicide prevention. He is currently the Principal Investigator for research projects in China with funds granted by the US National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Zhang has published books in both English and Chinese and has numerous articles printed in top journals in the world. He also directs the Center for China Studies on campus.

Sheri Zhang
Photo of Sheri ZhangSheri Zhang has a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Ottawa in Canada. She received her Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. She has taught courses in Chinese business communication, negotiation, modern East Asian culture, and all levels of Chinese language courses. After teaching at universities in Japan and China, she now is Professor and Coordinator for Chinese and Japanese at the University of Ottawa.

Yunqiu Zhang
Yunqiu Zhang is an Associate Professor at the Department of History, North Carolina A & T State University. His research area is modern China (labor, urbanization, state-societal relations), Daoism and Chinese historiography. He has published on these subjects.Zhang obtained his Ph. D from the University of Toronto. When in China, he worked as an editor of Lishi yanjiu (Historical Research) and Zhongguo shehui kexue (Social Sciences in China), in the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Jinghao Zhou
Photo of Jinghao ZhouJinhao Zhou completed his Bachelor of Philosophy at Nanjing University and Master of Philosophy at Wuhan University and then continued his education earning his Master of Divinity in Science at Union Theological Seminary in Virginia and Ph.D. at Baylor University. Zhou is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. Zhou is author of two books, Remaking China’s Public Philosophy for the Twenty-first Century (2003) and Remaking China’s Public Philosophy and Chinese Women’s LiberationThe Volatile Mixing of Confucianism, Marxism, and Feminism (2006). He has also published more than 40 articles in Chinese journals and 20 articles in English publications. His research interests include Chinese politics, ideology, Christianity, feminism, and the Sino-U.S. relations, focusing on China’s democratization and modernization in a global context.

Shu Zhou

Her research interests include supply chain management, inventory control, forecasting, and operations management-marketing interface. Her papers have appeared in IIE Transactions and Proceedings of PICMET. Zhou received her Ph.D. in Operations Management in 2007 from Cornell University, the S. C. Johnson Graduate School of Management. She got her bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems from Tsinghua University, China, and a master's degree in Management from Cornell University.

Zhiqun Zhu
Photo of Zhiqun ZhuZhiqun Zhu is Associate Professor of Political Science and International Relations and MacArthur Chair in East Asian Politics at Bucknell University. His teaching and research interests include Chinese politics and foreign policy, East Asian political economy, US-East Asian relations, and international relations theory. Prof. Zhu is the author of US-China Relations in the 21st Century: Power Transition and Peace (Routledge, 2006) and Understanding East Asia’s Economic Miracles (The Association for Asian Studies, 2009), and editor of Global Studies: China (McGraw-Hill, 2009). He is working on a book about China’s new diplomacy as it searches for oil and other resources around the world. His research articles have appeared on Asian Perspective, Global Economic Review, Journal of International and Area Studies, Journal of Asia-Pacific Affairs, Journal of Chinese Political Science, and Yale Journal of International Affairs, etc. Dr. Zhu has won several research fellowships including a visiting fellowship to the East Asian Institute at National University of Singapore, a POSCO fellowship at the East-West Center in Hawaii, and a Korea Foundation/Freeman Foundation research fellowship to Korea.
